Letter from the Editor Nearly five years ago I was given the challenge of developing a series of historical fiction for girls. And it was a challenge. How to develop a series of historical books for young readers that would not, quite frankly, be a bore? As someone asked me—are these going to be great stories or history lessons? Obviously, I wanted them to be fantastic stories. I thought back to my own childhood reading experiences. I remembered the pleasure of meeting a girl my age, who had fun, like I did; who worried about the same things I did; who was perhaps like me but lived decades, even hundreds of years, before me. Reading about girls from the past I was transported from my own, rather ordinary childhood, to other, truly exotic ones. I think that those early, fortunate reading experiences made me love reading, and made me a reader for life. In this series of stories about twelve different girls, you'll see how each and every author has embraced the challenge of creating historical tales that have made thousands of Canadian girls fall in love with both our country's past and with the pleasures of reading. With passion and intelligence, each book in the Our Canadian Girl series tells a great story and introduces girls to heroines they can relate to, a world that will fascinate them, and stories that they'll cherish for years to come.
