Elizabeth

Get to Know Her

Describe what a typical day is like for you.
In the summer, I rise early with the sun. I clean out the chamber pots and bring in fresh water from the well, then firewood from the woodpile. Next I head to the barn where I muck out the stalls, and feed and water the animals. Then I find Bessie, who doesn't usually wander far. Once I've milked her, I bring fresh milk and eggs to Mama and help with breakfast.

Since I have no brothers, Papa usually lets me help him with fieldwork, especially when there is lots to do. Mama understands that I like working outdoors far more than inside. Mathilde often works with her brothers and father and so we get to work together.

Who is the most important person in your life?
I love my Mama and Papa the most in the world . . . but I wake up thinking about what Mathilde and I might do every day, so I'd have to say that here in Nova Scotia it's Mathilde too.

What thing do you love most in the world?
I love Bessie's cowbell. Papa lets Bessie wander in the woods during the day because she never goes far. I can always find her by her clanging bell. It seems to say, "Here I am" in such a safe way.

What is your greatest wish?
That Mathilde's family can buy land and live on a farm near us.

What is your greatest fear?
That someone I know will get sick. When people get very sick, I'm afraid they will die.

What do you do for fun?
In the evenings, we tell stories and sing songs. Monsieur Leblanc plays his fiddle. During the day, Mathilde and I like to go berry picking and explore the woods.

What aspect of life in the twenty-first century do you think you would love the most?
I'd love the clothes girls get to wear, especially shorts, when it's so hot in summer.

What aspect of life in the twenty-first century do you think you would dislike the most?
All the garbage and pollution. It's destroying the earth.
