Get to Know Her

Describe what a typical day is like for you.
I try and get out of bed early, even though it's always so cold in the morning, so I can help Maman with breakfast. We usually have toast that's made from bread left over from the day before, and a cup of tea. After breakfast, it's time to walk to school. Sometimes I have to carry Emilie, as she gets tired from the long walk. Although the nuns are very strict, I love going to school. My favourite subject is arithmetic. After school, I help Maman with chores, and sometimes she lets me help with supper. On Sundays, instead of going to school I go to church with my family. I always sit next to my cousin Lucille, who is my best friend.

Who is the most important person in your life?
There are two -- my Maman and Papa.

What thing do you love most in the world?
Going to church with my family. I love sitting next to Lucille and listening to the beautiful music.

What is your greatest wish?
That my brother Louis will come home safely from the war in the West.

What is your greatest fear?
That someone I love will fall ill from smallpox or another terrible disease.

What do you do for fun?
In the wintertime I love to play in the snowdrifts with Lucille. Sometimes we even throw snowballs at the boys! I also like going down to the river. In the spring I love to watch the ice breaking up -- it makes the funniest sounds. It's almost as if the river is alive.

What aspect of life in the twenty-first century do you think you would love the most?
I love the fact that your doctors can cure so many diseases. Nobody gets smallpox in your time, and there are vaccines for diseases such as diphtheria and measles.

What aspect of life in the twenty-first century do you think you would dislike the most?
People are so busy, rushing from place to place in their automobiles. No one ever seems to walk anywhere. And even though your streets are much cleaner than they were in my time, the pollution from automobiles makes your air so dirty.
