Rachel

Get to Know Her

Describe what a typical day is like for you.
I eat whatever's available, usually cornmeal, and, if I'm lucky, a bit of treacle to sweeten it. In summer I pull the berries from the hedgerows. Sometimes I spend time in the forest, or watch the sea foam, angry on the water, or help Mamma with the baby. There aren't too many chores, just tending to the fire or taking the ashes out to the midden close to the cabin.

Who is the most important person in your life?
Mamma.

What thing do you love most in the world?
To see the sun after the long winter.

What is your greatest wish?
To find out what it really means to be free.

What is your greatest fear?
To be caught and brought to slavery again.

What do you do for fun?
Talk to my friend Ann-Marie, imagine.

What aspect of life in the twenty-first century do you think you would love the most?
Being able to go to school like any white child. Eating whatever I pleased.

What aspect of life in the twenty-first century do you think you would dislike the most?
The traffic would scare me, racing down the road at a hundred kilometres an hour. It's not natural. And planes? I don't even want to think about them.
