Elizabeth: Bless This House

Historical Context:
Set in 1762, Elizabeth: Bless This House helps children learn about the Acadian deportation and its consequences. Elizabeth's family, Protestants from New England, have taken ownership of an Acadian farm. Elizabeth befriends an Acadian girl and through that friendship learns the importance of tolerance and generosity.

Class Activities:
Ask children to read the scene in Bless This House where Elizabeth confronts Mathilde LeBlanc, an Acadian girl, in the barn (pages 55-63). Ask the children to rewrite the scene from the perspective of Mathilde. Remind them to consider what it must have been like for Mathilde, seeing another family living in what was once her home -- the home she and her family were forced to leave. How must she have felt? Why did she run away before Elizabeth could return with extra food?
