Emily: Across the James Bay Bridge

Historical Context:
In the British Columbia of the 1890s there was a great disparity between the comforts of European immigrants and their impoverished Chinese counterparts. Educate your classroom about racism, cultural diversity and the impact of the economic depression of the late nineteenth century as you read about Emily's adventures in Victoria's Chinatown.

Class Activities:
Discuss issues of cultural diversity by inviting students to share a special custom or tradition from their cultural background with the class. Have students select a tradition from the a culture that interests them and write a short piece describing it in detail.

Web Resources:
Visit the University of Victoria's web page Chinese New Year to learn more about the celebration of this holiday. For a more general history of Chinese communities in Canada go to Across the Generations: A History of the Chinese in Canada.
