Rachel: A Mighty Big Imagining

Historical Context:
Rachel's story is about Loyalist slave settlements in Nova Scotia during the late 1700s. In addition to the difficulties of living in a harsh northern climate, Rachel's family faces the horrors of starvation, isolation in a remote community and the limitations of illiteracy.

Class Activities:
Share a brief history of Canada's role in the abolition of slavery with students. Have students prepare a report on famous abolitionists such as Harriet Tubman, a former slave involved in the Underground Railway. Ask students to research other examples of enslaved peoples or contemporary examples of how Canada helps fight for human rights.

Web Resources:
There are some great websites dedicated to historical black settlements across Canada. A good starting point is a section of the Nova Scotia Museum site entitled Remembering Black Loyalists, Black Communities. A teacher's resource section is included.
